Biobased
The term ‘biobased’ means ‘derived from biomass’. Biobased products (bottles, insulation materials, wood and wood products, paper solvents, chemical intermediates, composite materials, etc.) are products that are wholly or partly derived from biomass. It is essential to characterise the amount of biomass in the product by, for example, its biobased content or its biobased carbon content.
The biobased content of a product does not provide information on its environmental impact or sustainability, which can be assessed using LCA and sustainability criteria.

In addition, transparent and unambiguous communication within biobased value chains is made possible by a harmonised framework for certification and declaration. This European standard was developed with the aim of specifying the method for determining the biobased carbon content in biobased products using the 14C method.
This method using the 14C method is based on the analytical test methods used for determining the age of objects containing carbon. The C14 method applied to Anker Stuy’s Aplex Aqua products results in more than 50% of the product consisting of bio-based content. This is of course a very nice result and in the coming years we will work towards an even higher percentage.
